Children have been playing with wood toys since long before the comforts of modern civilization. Whether it's as simple as pretending a stick is a magical sword or something a bit more grandiose, wooden playthings are still exceptionally popular today. In fact, many parents are turning away from the more common plastic toys that are sold in just about every toy store, in favor of more classic wooden variations. They are an excellent way to stimulate your child's imagination, and more often than not, they are much more durable than the typical plastic toy.
Safety is an important characteristic of any child's toy, regardless of what it's made from. Unfortunately, many of the toys that are typically found on toy store shelves are not necessarily the safest option for a child. In some cases they contain small parts, which can cause choking problems with babies and toddlers. In other cases there might be toxicity issues with the plastic or coloring agents. However, most wooden toys are not associated with such issues. Few wood toys utilize parts that are small enough for a child to fit inside their mouth or swallow, and the woods used to make these toys are completely non-toxic.
Wooden Easel Stands
Many wood toys are considered "classics" because they have real, verifiable benefits for small children. Building blocks, for example, have a long history when it comes to children's toys, mainly because they are proven to help a child develop fine motor control, as well as help them develop spatial awareness. Furthermore, wood has more interesting tactile qualities than does plastic, making it more interesting to small, inexperienced hands.
Finally, when it comes to children's toys, durability is always an important consideration. Any parent will attest to the fact that toddlers have an almost universal ability to destroy everything around them, and toys that cannot stand up to a toddler's unique style of abuse should probably be taken out of the equation. Fortunately, wood tends to withstand a beating much more readily than does plastic, and as such it is often considered a better material for making toys. Plastic may be less expensive, but from many viewpoints, wood toys are the best option.
